Szeged equals canoe-kayak. And if so, nobody wants to be left out or left behind, so it is not a coincidence that the best of the young athletes from 27 countries entered to race at the Olympic Hopes Regatta. An outstanding number of entries were submitted, and not only from Europe, but U15-16-17 athletes will arrive from Australia, the United States and Canada, who are very much looking forward to compete in the “Mecca” of canoeing, at the Maty-ér regatta course.

“The Olympic Hopes regatta is the outcome of a Polish-Czech-Slovak-Hungarian agreement. We have been organizing this event on rotation for more than a decade now; Hungary always hosts in the Olympic year, so in the year that has a special significance”, said Bálint Vékássy, Competition Manager. “Last year, 20 nations competed in Poland, this time there are 27, which is a historical record. How is this possible? Szeged is very popular venue, and while there will not be a crowd of thousands of people as in a senior World Championships, the regatta will still have a very special atmosphere. At the same time our beloved sport is growing at an unexpected rate so the call for events like this is huge”

The Hungarian team will be about 100 strong, and in line with the traditions of the Hungarian canoe-kayak sport, and their athletes are anticipated to rake in lots of medals but there are quite a few challengers from teams like Germany, Lithuania, Great Britain, France etc.. The 200m sprint event became part of the competition programme a few years ago, so the event now is a three-day competition. Accordingly the 1000m event will take place on Friday, the 500m events on Saturday, and the 200m events on  Sunday will crown new champions.
